Terrorism Coverage in Travel Insurance

You may have already heard of the news. Al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden, had been confirmed, by the US President himself, dead in a military operation conducted American soldiers.

This caused majority of people to celebrate but the looming likelihood of terrorism attacks of revenge triggered fear among travelers. Terrorism has once again become a center of concern regarding travel insurance. That said, it is vital for people who want to travel to know how protected they are by their travel insurance policies.

US citizens are even warned by the government to refrain from traveling due to the high risk of terrorist attacks. Anti-American violence can just happen at any place and time because of recent events. The State Department also stated that people should avoid public demonstrations and mass gatherings because it attracts the attention of terrorists.

The 30-day Time-Frame

Travel insurance policies vary in their coverage when it comes to terrorist attacks. A smart traveler should be attentive of terrorism coverage if that is the main concern. Some travel insurance companies have policies that strictly states that a terrorist attack must take place within thirty days of departure. This is perhaps the most generous time-frame that is currently given by any insurance company while others offer only a time-frame of seven to ten days.

Considering only terrorism coverage, the thirty-day time-frame is advisable. Such policies allow the traveler more than enough time to cancel in an event of terrorist attack. That ample amount of time can be used to deliberate if traveling to particular destination is not worth the risk.

Take this for instance. An act of terrorism occurred 20 days prior to departure. If your policy has the thirty-day time-frame, your cancellations will be provided for by your insurance. However, if you hold a policy with limited terrorism coverage time-frame, say for example, ten days, your claim would be invalid.

However, it should be noted that the strength of terrorism coverage does not define the whole travel insurance policy but recent events challenges that assertion.

Here are some providers that offer policies with 30-day time-frame according to Squaremouth:

  • Travel Insurance Services
  • Travel Safe
  • MH Ross
  • Travel Insured International
  • Travel Guard
  • Seven Corners
  • Global Alert
  • Travelex Insurance Services

Travel insurance providers with only seven to ten days in their terrorism coverage are HTH Worldwide and CSA Travel Protection among others.

Bear in mind that your cancellations are not covered if you only do it out of fear. Cancelling your trips because you are fearful of an impending terrorist attack is not covered in your policy.
